James scored six points in the first quarter before a dunk and three 3-pointers put him level on points with Malone.
A layup later in the second quarter took him past Malone’s record.
However, it wasn’t enough to prevent the Wizards from overturning a 16-point deficit to end a six-game losing streak.
Asked if he could break Abdul-Jabbar’s record, James said: “I won’t let myself think about it.
“I’ve always played the game the way I’ve been playing it over the years, and these things just happened organically just by going out there and playing the game the right way.
“I hope to achieve that at some point in my career, but I won’t think about it too much.”
