Iwobi hits injury-time winner for 10-man Everton against Newcastle

Alex Iwobi’s goal in the 99th minute gave Everton a major victory in their fight against relegation as they held on to beat Newcastle despite being reduced to 10 men.

An average game, which was delayed by a protester who tied himself to a goal post by his neck, was brought to life late when Anthony Gordon tested Martin Dubravka with a curved shot.

But the mood soon soured when Allan was sent off with seven minutes remaining for removing Newcastle substitute Allan Saint-Maximin after referee Craig Pawson consulted the pitch monitor and overturned his initial decision to book the Everton midfielder.

At the time, and with 14 minutes of injury time to play due to the protest, hoping for a draw seemed the best that Frank Lampard’s side could do.

However, in the ninth minute of added time, substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin led a breakaway and slipped Iwobi before he found the bottom corner.

It led to wild celebrations at Goodison Park as Everton picked up just their second win in 13 Premier League games to put three points between them and the relegation zone.

But, as Lampard and his players embraced in delight at the final whistle, it felt like a victory worth much more than three points as they sent Newcastle to a second successive loss.
