“Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler falsely detained after being mistaken for bank robber, video shows

“Black Panther” director Ryan Kugler, one of America’s most successful filmmakers, was falsely arrested when a Bank of America cashier confused him with a bank robber, according to a recently released video.

The disturbing incident happened in January in Atlanta, where Coogler was filming his sequel. “Black pantherPolice approached him a few minutes after giving a note to a cashier asking her to be discreet about withdrawing money.

“Well, sir, do me a favor. Get out of here,” an officer was heard saying in the video.

Both police officers pulled out their guns before handcuffing a surprised Coogler, the video shows. He was there responding to a possible bank robbery in progress.

According to the police report, Coogler had given a cash receipt to the cashier with a note written on the back, asking her to be discreet when she gave him $ 12,000 in cash. After being handcuffed, he was escorted to a team car outside the bank.

Coogler, who also directed the 2013 film “Fruitvale Station,” was heard asking police to search for his name on Google.

“If you say my name, you will understand why you have to take off these cuffs,” he told police while he was being held in the car.

From the back seat of the police vehicle, Coogler explained that he was trying not to draw attention to himself by taking in such a large amount of cash.

“If I do not write on a note how much I want and that I do not want to go through the counter right in the office, the whole bank ends up looking at me,” he told police.

Kugler left the handcuffs a few minutes later.

In a statement to CBS News, a Bank of America spokesman said: “We deeply regret this incident. It should never have happened and we apologize to Mr Coogler.”

Through a spokesman, Coogler told CBS News: “This situation should never have happened. However, Bank of America cooperated with me and addressed it to my satisfaction and we moved on.”
