The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, told a UN Human Rights Council meeting on Tuesday that she would travel to China in May. The trip, the first in China by a UN rights group since 2005, will include meetings with officials, as well as a visit to the western province of Xinjiang. <\/p>\n

“I am pleased to announce that we have recently reached an agreement with the Chinese government on a visit,” Bachelet said in Geneva. Negotiations for such a visit have been going on for years.<\/p>\n

Bachelet has announced that a preliminary team will travel to China in April to prepare for its visit. Her spokesman said Chinese authorities had promised the UNHCR “unrestricted access to a wide range of actors, including civil society” during her visit to Xinjiang. Bachelet said the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and Beijing “have begun concrete preparations for a visit scheduled for May.”<\/p>\n

Bachelet said she was concerned about the treatment of people who openly raised human rights issues or criticized the authorities, noting that some had been jailed or placed under house arrest after speaking out. Bachelet called on Beijing to respect and protect freedom of expression.<\/p>\n

Bachelet comes under fire for Xinjiang’s long-awaited report<\/h2>\n

The news of the visit was received by diplomats, but they also told Bachelet that he “should not hide the urgency of publishing the report” on the human rights situation in Xinjiang.<\/p>\n

Bachelet has been criticized for failing to publish a report on the situation that was commissioned more than three and a half years ago. Human rights activists have been waiting for its release for months and have called for it to be released without delay.<\/p>\n

Nearly 200 such groups released an open letter to Bachelet on Tuesday, denouncing the long delay and noting that many of them had clearly documented the abuses in Xinjiang. The letter said they included “systematic state-organized mass detention, torture, persecution and other offenses of a scale and nature equivalent to crimes against humanity.”<\/p>\n

The letter said the groups were “concerned about your office’s relative silence in the face of these serious violations”, saying: “We have repeatedly sounded the alarm, including your office, about the extreme measures taken by the Chinese authorities since 2017.”<\/p>\n

Last week, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged Bachelet to release the report “without delay”, noting that the Chinese government continues to commit genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang against predominantly Muslim Uighurs and other minorities. teams “. <\/p>\n
