A Twitter address by Hollywood actor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the Russian people is among the top Twitter trends in Russia on Friday and has sparked reactions from various quarters. <\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In it, he warns the Russian people that they are receiving misinformation about their country’s assault on Ukraine. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

He says the Kremlin intentionally lied to them by saying the invasion was intended to “de-Nazify” Ukraine. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Ukraine did not start the war, but “those in power in the Kremlin” did. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Addressing Russian President Vladimir Putin directly, he says: “You started this war and you can stop it.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In the nine-minute video, which shows footage of murder and destruction in Ukraine, the actor-turned-politician calls on people to see through misinformation and propaganda.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“I’m talking to you today because things are happening in the world that are keeping you from you, terrible things that you should know about,” he says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Ukraine did not start this war, neither the nationalists nor the Nazis,” says the former California governor, noting that the country’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, is Jewish. “This is not the war of the Russian people.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The Austrian-born former bodybuilding champion, whose film Red Heat was the first American film shot in Moscow’s Red Square, speaks of his affection for the Russian people. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“The strength and heart of the Russian people have always inspired me,” he says. “That’s why I hope you’ll let me tell you the truth about the war in Ukraine.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He goes on to say, “This is an illegal war. Their lives, their limbs, their future have been sacrificed for a senseless war condemned by the entire world.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The video has garnered nearly 24 million views and more than 310,000 retweets so far, and is among the top Twitter trends in Russia on Friday morning. Among the actor’s Twitter followers are the Kremlin’s Russian and English accounts. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

His comments have been praised by Russians who condemn the war.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Arnold Schwarzenegger has a unique ability to talk to anyone with persuasion, respect and on equal terms. Ingenuity, power and justice. Listen. Think about it. Understand,” says opposition politician Lev Shlosberg on Telegram.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Another reads: “Of course you have seen Schwarzenegger’s speech. Do you know why it is good? In fact, it is filmed with respect to us Russians. We are marginalized in the world and Russophobia, which used to be a propaganda myth during years, has disappeared. Unfortunately it has now materialized. Arnold is one of the few people who addressed the Russians not as wild orcs, but as good people who have lost their way,” liberal journalist Anton Orekh also said on Telegram.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But a fake pro-Kremlin account, Barack Obmana, on Twitter has a different take: “The US State Department believes that the opinion of US paid speakers is very important to us. For a a certain amount of money, the second half of Hollywood will say … No, they will not, they will be kicked out from everywhere because in the US there are only Anglo-Saxon Reich opinions, and Arni is disguised as Polizei” . <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Russia has always said that the war in Ukraine was a “special operation” to protect Russian-speaking Ukrainians.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
