Ukraine praised the courage of three European leaders who made a long and dangerous train journey from Poland to kyiv in a show of support when the city came under renewed Russian attack.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The prime ministers of Poland, Slovenia and the Czech Republic arrived Tuesday night as the Ukrainian capital entered a 35-hour curfew.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The trip was a Polish idea, after the EU warned of possible security risks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Mateusz Morawiecki from Poland said that it was in kyiv that history was made.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt is here, where freedom fights against the world of tyranny. It is here that the future of all of us hangs in the balance,\u201d he tweeted. He explained that they were sending the message that Ukraine could count on the help of her friends.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Morawiecki, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Slovenian Janez Jansa are the first international leaders to visit President Vladimir Zelensky and the Ukrainian Prime Minister since Russia launched war against its neighbor on February 24.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The European Union said they had no particular mandate, but leaders in Brussels were aware of the trip, as was raised during an informal EU summit in Versailles last week. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Poland’s deputy foreign minister, Marcin Przydacz, admitted it was risky, but said “it was worth taking for the sake of values.” He said the Russians had been told the visit was taking place. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The leaders decided to travel by train because flying in a Polish military plane could have been seen by Russia as dangerously provocative, reports BBC Europe editor Katya Adler. It was not immediately clear when his train would make the return trip to Warsaw.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ukraine’s president has repeatedly asked NATO to impose a no-fly zone over his country’s airspace, but NATO has refused.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Zelensky said that the Ukrainians now understood that they could not join NATO. \u201cWe heard for years that the doors were open, but we also heard that we couldn’t come together. It is a truth and it must be recognized. I’m glad our people are beginning to understand this and trust in themselves and in our partners who Help us.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
