Dina Asher-Smith says she is now a “stronger athlete” and will compete in May’s Birmingham Diamond League before defending her world and European titles this summer.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 26-year-old British 100m and 200m record holder’s hopes of Olympic glory at Tokyo 2020 were dashed by injury.<\/span><\/p>\n

“That’s behind me now and my focus is on the busy summer ahead,” he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Asher-Smith is the current 200m world champion and current European champion in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relays.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Last year was full of emotional ups and downs, but I think I’m a stronger athlete now because of it,” Asher-Smith said.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I was in great shape at the start of the season and heartbroken that I couldn’t compete to my full potential in Tokyo, but I was also incredibly proud to come home with a relay medal and end my year on such a strong note.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The London-born sprinter was part of the Team GB quartet to claim bronze in the 4x100m relay at Tokyo 2020 and Rio 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n

Asher-Smith <\/span>failed to reach the 100m final in Tokyo<\/span> and withdrew from the <\/span>200 m with a hamstring injury.<\/span><\/p>\n

He now focuses on the 100m at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium on May 21.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I’m really looking forward to returning to Birmingham for the first time since 2019 and starting my season in the best way possible – happy and with great support at home,” added Asher-Smith.<\/span><\/p>\n

She will defend her 200m title at the World Championships in Eugene in the US from July 15-24, and her three European golds from August 15-21 at the Munich Olympic Stadium.<\/span><\/p>\n
