According to research by Yale University, more than 300 large international companies have so far reacted to the brutal invasion of Ukraine. From retail to energy, technology and entertainment, over the course of two weeks, global Western companies rushed to leave the increasingly isolated nation.

But for companies with more exposure in Russia, the decision to sever ties with Moscow could do more harm than good to the reputation of staying in the market.

The big players are split in half

Half of the 10 largest international companies in Russia have decided to close or reduce their activities, highlighting supply chain issues and the military crisis in Ukraine. The rest have said little to nothing about the situation since the war began.

This is true of the Swiss-American tobacco company Philip Morris International, which in 2020 was ranked as the highest-grossing international company in Russia, having raised almost $ 2.6 billion (€ 2.4 billion). The company has temporarily suspended operations in Ukraine, but continues its operations in Russia and says it is closely monitoring further developments.

Who stays? Who stayed?

Another leading player, the Japanese tobacco company JTI, has five factories and 4,500 employees throughout Russia. It currently operates in Russia, but has suspended local production at its plant in Ukraine, raising concerns for the safety of workers.

A handful of French companies with exposure to the Russian market also continue to trade. Revenue retailer Leroy Merlin, which follows Philip Morris in revenue, said last week that its 112 stores across Russia would continue to operate normally and that it had no plans to withdraw from the market. The Auchan Group, another huge French retailer with nearly 300 stores and 41,000 employees in Russia, has shown no sign of shutting down.

car manufacturers

Some automakers rushed to halt domestic production in Russia as the war intensified. Both Germany’s Volkswagen and Japan’s Toyota have cut production at their Russian plants and suspended car exports to Russia indefinitely, citing supply chain disruptions. Luxury carmakers Rolls Royce, Jaguar Land Rover and Aston Martin cut sales and shipments to Russia, while Mercedes Benz and BMW cut off exports and production on the ground. Volvo, Nissan, Honda, Ford and General Motors have implemented similar measures.

But for the Renault Group, an agreement signed in 2007 connects the French carmaker with Russia, which with 12% of its revenue represents its second largest market. Renault then entered this thriving market through the acquisition of AvtoVaz, the maker of the Soviet-era iconic Lada.

Techn

Many technology companies have closed their stores. Software companies Microsoft and SAP are among those who have suspended sales of new products.

Google and Facebook parent company Meta have banned Russian state media from displaying and taking advantage of ads on their platforms. Spotify announced the closure of its Moscow office, but said it would continue to allow access to its content in an effort to counter propaganda and misinformation.

Despite the large exposure to the Russian market, technology companies Apple and Samsung have chosen to respond to sanctions imposed by the US, the EU and others.

Apple has discontinued all local product sales through Apple Stores and restricted the functionality of some of its services, including the Apple Pay payment platform. Despite leading the Russian smartphone market, Samsung has stopped shipping smartphones and chips to Russia.

Fashion

The fast fashion brands H&M and Zara announced their withdrawal from the Russian market last week, temporarily closing their stores and stopping local sales. The American jeans brand Levi’s, which became a symbol of freedom during the Soviet era, joined on Monday.

Nike, Puma and Adidas sports brands have also been added to the fashion retailers’ outlet. Adidas even went one step further, suspending its cooperation with the Russian Football Federation.

Luxury brands Chanel, Prada, Hermes, Burberry, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton and Kering, owned by Gucci and Saint Laurent, also stopped selling.

Financing

International payment giants Visa, Mastercard and American Express discontinued their services immediately after the imposition of sanctions. Visa, for example, announced the closure of all its transactions and warned that cards issued in Russia would no longer operate abroad.

PayPal payment platform also closed its services.

Food and retail

Along with McDonald’s and Starbucks, Coca-Cola also said it was leaving the Russian market. Consumer brands Unilever and Kraft Heinz have suspended all Russian imports and exports.

Swedish furniture retailer IKEA announced last week its decision to suspend production and retail operations in Russia and Belarus, as well as to suspend all imports and exports to and from these countries.

Edited by: Kristie Pladson

Source

A corporate exodus followed the invasion of Ukraine, with major international companies withdrawing or restricting their operations in Russia in response.
