With their heads bowed and surrounded by heavily armed police, the first suspects were arrested almost a decade after the deadly shooting of Puerto Rican iconic boxer Hector Kamacho<\/span> appeared in court Wednesday to face murder charges.<\/p>\n

Five men are accused of killing the Macho Camacho fighter and a friend while sitting in a Ford Mustang outside a bar in November 2012, a murder that shocked many who respected the boxer.<\/p>\n

Three of the suspects were serving federal fines for unrelated crimes and were flown from Florida as part of what police called “Operation Knockout.” A fourth suspect was arrested in the same hours in the same town where Camacho was killed, coming out with a towel wrapped around his waist a few minutes after police officers with long guns surrounded his house and knocked on a window. A fifth suspect remains in prison in Puerto Rico for an unrelated case.<\/p>\n

Authorities said two other suspects were killed in unrelated incidents in 2013 and 2015.<\/p>\n

Hours after the suspects were charged, Camacho’s elderly mother entered the Puerto Rican Ministry of Justice and raised her right fist.<\/p>\n

“Justice! Justice has been done!” she exclaimed as her voice broke.<\/p>\n

Camacho, 50, was shot in the face and was clinically dead, but remained in life support for several days after the shooting as relatives discussed what to do while supporters remained awake outside the hospital.<\/p>\n

Former Puerto Rican boxer V\u00edctor Callejas, a close friend of Camacho, told the Associated Press it was extremely important to him that many suspects were eventually charged in the case, as he continued to mourn the fighter: “He was not the type of person who “On the contrary, he always tried to make people laugh one way or another. He was a unique character.”<\/p>\n

Police said Camacho was shot once while outside a bar called “Azuquita” in the northern city of Bayam\u00f3n, sitting in a car with a friend identified as Adri\u00e1n Mojica Moreno, who had nine young children. cocaine bags<\/span> in his pocket and a 10th bag that was open. Janet Parra, a prosecutor overseeing the Justice Department for Organized Crime and Drugs, said she could not reveal the motive behind the killing or share information. “We were not left with folded arms,” \u200b\u200bhe said.<\/p>\n

Jessica Korea, which oversees public prosecutors, added that she was pleased with the arrests: “This case shocked (the island) … A Puerto Rican boxing star has died.”<\/p>\n

The suspects have been identified as William Rodr\u00edguez Rodr\u00edguez, Luis Ayala Garc\u00eda and Joshua M\u00e9ndez Romero, who are being held on $ 800,000 bail. The fourth suspect was identified as Jesus Naranjo Adorno, held on $ 300,000 bail. The fifth was identified as Juan Figueroa Rivera, being held on a $ 1 million bond.<\/p>\n

It was not possible to contact their lawyers directly for comment.<\/p>\n

“I was given justice,” said Kamacho’s mother. “I can sleep peacefully. I can eat and drink a small cup of coffee in the morning.”<\/p>\n

The boxing heritage of Camacho<\/h3>\n

Camacho was considered one of the most controversial figures in boxing, but he was also popular with fans and those who worked in the sport.<\/p>\n

“Macho Man was the dream of a supporter,” the famous supporter Don King told the AP. “He excited boxing fans around the world with his unparalleled style. He was a nice, friendly guy away from the ring.”<\/p>\n

The fighter’s last title fight came against then-welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya in 1997, a defeat by unanimous decision. He last played in May 2010, losing to Saul Duran. Tannenbaum said they were considering a possible match in 2013.<\/p>\n

Camacho was born in Bayamon, one of the cities that make up the San Juan metropolitan area.<\/p>\n

He left Puerto Rico as a child and grew up mostly in New York’s Haarlem neighborhood, one of the reasons he later earned the nickname “Harlem Heckler”.<\/p>\n

In the 1980s he won world titles in super light, light and medium weights.<\/p>\n

Camacho fought other high-profile fights in his career against Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez and Sugar Ray Leonard. Camacho knocked out Leonard in 1997, ending the former champion’s last attempt to return.<\/p>\n

Camacho had a career record of 79-6-3.<\/p>\n
