A face-to-face meeting in Turkey between Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba and Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov failed to make progress in ending the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Kuleba said on Thursday.<\/p>\n

It was the first time top diplomats had met since Russia invaded its neighbor on February 24.<\/p>\n

What did Kuleba say?<\/h2>\n

Commenting on the Reuters news agency, Kuleba told a news conference that Lavrov’s “broad narrative” was that Russia would continue its invasion until Ukraine met its demands.<\/p>\n

“Russia is not in a position at the moment to establish a ceasefire. They are seeking a surrender from Ukraine. They are not going to take that. Ukraine is strong, Ukraine is fighting,” Kuleba said.<\/p>\n

Kyiv has always rejected Moscow’s calls for demilitarization, recognition of Crimea as part of Russia, and recognition of two separatist regions in the Donbas region as autonomous states, among others.<\/p>\n

Kuleba also said that Lavrov seemed to have a different idea from what foreign ministers were doing in such a crisis.<\/p>\n

What did Lavrov say?<\/h2>\n

For his part, Lavrov reiterated the Kremlin’s claims that the West had provoked the conflict by forcing Ukraine to choose between close ties with Moscow and integration into Western Europe.<\/p>\n

He said the West posed a long-term threat to the region and that those who supplied weapons to Ukraine should be aware of how dangerous it is.<\/p>\n

He added that Russia presented its proposals to Ukraine at the meeting and wants an answer. <\/p>\n

Lavrov said Russia wanted a “friendly, demilitarized Ukraine” without any threat to Moscow or Russian culture.<\/p>\n

He also said that President Vladimir Putin would not refuse a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss “specific” issues.<\/p>\n

Asked about the bombing of a children’s hospital in Mariupol, southern Ukraine, Lavrov said Western media outlets had not given “both sides” an answer. <\/p>\n

He said there had been no women or children in the hospital for a long time, only “armed radicals”.<\/p>\n

Earlier, other Russian officials claimed the allegations were fabricated.<\/p>\n

And when asked if the current conflict could lead to a nuclear war, Lavrov said: “I do not want to believe and I do not believe that a nuclear war can start.” <\/p>\n

Kuleba: “Expectations are limited”<\/h2>\n
