A wildlife organization is seeking help to find the culprit behind the brutal attacks on at least 32 brown pelicans that have been mutilated and left dead along the coast in Orange County, California, which stretches from San Clemente to Huntington Beach.
According to the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center, a rehabilitation center that focuses on helping injured animals, 22 of the pelicans have suffered complex fractures in their wings, exposing the bone to the environment. “These are very serious injuries that require urgent surgery and long-term care,” said Dr. Elizabeth Wood, a veterinarian who assists in caring for injured animals.
In recent months, an increase in pelican attacks has led the organization to believe it was deliberate.
The organization held a press conference on Wednesday and asks anyone with information to report it to the authorities at 888-334-2258. A $ 500 reward is also offered for information, according to CBS Los Angeles.
“Be our eyes and ears: Be vigilant when you are on or near our oceans,” the center said in a statement.
