A group created to inspire Muslims to explore the great outdoors has gone from strength to strength, despite receiving abusive comments on social media.
At its latest event, the Muslim Hikers walking group saw over 120 people walking together on Stanage Edge in Derbyshire’s Peak District.
After the group shared photos from a hike last year on Facebook, some users left abusive comments, one of which wrote, “Leave this place for proper hikers only.”
The negative comments were met with an “outpouring of love and support” from others and the Muslim Hikers group continues to grow.
Founder Haroon Mota said there is a “huge level of under-representation” and the events organized were designed to build trust with members.
“We are here for everyone and the outdoors is for everyone too, so I think we should all go out and enjoy it more,” he added.
